A unique approach to lactation care

As a Certified Physician Assistant + Lactation Counselor, I offer a unique model of lactation care for evaluating breastfeeding concerns, which includes ordering labs for low milk supply, interpreting results, and providing personalized medical advice to support your breastfeeding goals.

Consults + Lab-Only options available

You can choose from the appointment types below, including a labs-only encounter (asynchronous visit) if you are are already working closely with an IBCLC and only need labs done or my Low Supply Package which includes a consult, follow-up, and labs.

Why get labs for low milk supply?

There can be many factors at play when a mother has low milk supply. Evaluating feeding and care practices, positioning and latch, milk transfer, and an exam to assess your baby for oral ties are critical first steps. It’s also vital to evaluate your whole health history, including medications / supplements / herbs, and review your pregnancy, birth, and events immediately postpartum in detail.

Once the foundations have been addressed, having labs done provides an insightful additional layer to your care. Blood tests can identify organic causes of low milk supply, such as anemia, thyroid issues, insulin resistance, signs of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), nutritional deficiencies, and low prolactin. This tells us what to target to best support and increase your milk supply.

No more fighting with your provider to order labs.

No more hearing “no, I don’t order labs for that,”"

“they won’t tell us anything,” or  “I don’t know what we’d do with the results.”

You deserve better.

Book a consult or labs-only appointment below
and you’ll get lab orders if you want them, guaranteed.

Use your insurance for labs

I supply the lab orders. You bring those orders to a LabCorp near you, provide them with your insurance information, and they can bill your insurance directly. Simple as that.

Need or prefer to do cash-pay? I’ve got you. We can instead go through RupaHealth, who mails a lab kit to your home, helps you find and schedule with a local phlebotomist near you, and you mail the kit to the lab yourself. Contact me at sara@madetomotherlactation.com for pricing and details.

“Normal” is not optimal

Normal lab values are wide ranges that show us what lab value is typical for the average person. However, this often does not reflect what is optimal for a breastfeeding mother for her overall wellness and to support milk supply.

If you choose to get labs, you will not only receive your results with the lab-provided normal ranges, but you’ll also get my lactation-specific interpretation guide. This guide outlines optimal ranges for each lab result, showing the numerical window in which your results need to fall to be considered optimal for breastfeeding mothers.

Choose the option that best serves you.

FAQs

Do you take insurance?
I do not take insurance at this time, BUT if you have your labs done with LabCorp, you can ask them to bill your insurance directly for the labs themselves. For consults with me, I provide you with a Superbill that you can submit to insurance or HSA/HRA to request reimbursement.

Can you see patients across the world?
I wish I could! Since I am a Certified Physician Assistant licensed in the state of North Carolina, the NC Medical Board requires that I only see patients who live in North Carolina. This means you must be in NC for me to legally see you for care.

I don’t have good internet access; can we do a phone call instead?
Yes! I can accommodate for phone visits if a video visit is not doable.

I am already working with an IBCLC. Can I just have labs done with you?
Yes! There is a Labs-Only option, where I order your labs and provide you with results and my lactation-specific interpretation guide. You can bring this to your IBCLC to review with them and decide on next steps together.

If you choose the Labs-Only option but later decide you want to meet with me to discuss recommendations, you can book a consult at that time. Contact me at sara@madetomotherlactation.com for details.

Meet Sara Wilson, PA-C, CLC

Women’s Health Physician Assistant, Certified Lactation Counselor, Mother of 3, and Owner of Made to Mother Lactation, PLLC.

I know first hand how challenging breastfeeding can be and that pregnancy and postpartum is such a transformative and vulnerable time in a woman’s life.

Between my 3 girls, I have 3 years (and counting) of experience with nursing and pumping, including juggling breastfeeding and working full-time in medicine.

I have personally navigated pain with nursing, using a nipple shield, reflux and food protein intolerances, body tension and torticollis, tongue tie, and supplementation.

Through all I’ve experienced personally and my professional expertise caring for women as a PA since 2017 + supporting breastfeeding mothers as a CLC since 2021, I created the Made to Mother Milk Circle to cultivate a community to more holistically serve breastfeeding mothers like you.

"A mother's strength is not in doing it alone, but in the support system that lifts her up when she needs it most."
